It’s finally official. Michael Howard will remain the artistic director of Tulane Summer Lyric Theater for its 2003 season.
Howard and Teresa Soufas, Dean of Tulane’s Liberal Arts & Sciences Dept., have both signed off on a letter of agreement outlining his duties for the upcoming season, with his performance to be reviewed on an annual basis and possibly extended, Soufas said.
“The best thing to come out of all this.” Howard said, “has been the support I have received from the theater’s steering committee, the theatrical community and the audiences who enjoy our shows and make them possible. The only way I can thank everyone is to try and give them the best season and the best musical theater possible.”
Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” will be the Lyric’s first show of the summer season, Howard said, with the remaining two musicals to be decided soon.
Plans are also under way for a fund-raising gala to replace the one cancelled when Howard’s abrupt dismissal caused a chorus of disapproval and stopped the Lyric program in its tracks for two months.
